I finally got to view Brabara Koppel's made-for-TV film, Woodstock: Now and Then. And, as Randy Brusewitz claimed, my song, The Caper, is played about twenty minutes into the film, right before a commercial break. I really wasn't sure I wanted to believe him, but, there it was (no, not gone...). Or at least, there was about twenty seconds of it, edited for brevity.
I can't believe he could hear that underneath the dialog! I'm both flattered that he was so familiar with my music, and astonished at his hearing!!
Now, let's hope it's worth a couple bucks, eh?

Braggin' Rights??
Well, as it happens, my friends are very creative and masterful musicians. Al Petteway and Amy White, dear friends of ours here in the Asheville area, have had their music placed in the new Ken Burns documentary series, "The National Parks - America's Best Idea". I played on a couple of the songs on the "Land of the Sky" album by Al and Amy. In fact, I'm proud to have been chosen to be the only 'outsider' on that CD!
Anyway, most of the music on the first show, "The Scripture Of Nature (1851-1890)", was Al and Amy's. Bill Mize also has a song placed in the series, but it's not in the first episode.
So, to cut to the chase, if you go here, you can view the show in its entirety. In my 'ego trolling' I made it easy for you to find my itty-bitty part in the show at around 50:50 remaining. The song starts at about 51:30 remaining. And, I made the credits! (about 1:58 remaining) Yay! So, though there's no cash for me (boo-hoo), I do get a bullet point on my press kit, Yay!

Big thanks to Al & Amy for the opportunity to be heard in that cool context!!!
Update: I just found out that same song is played in episodes 2 and 3.

David Wilcox has a great new song!!
Just got back from a great meal at David and Nance's house with Annie and David & Deanna Lamotte. Great food, great conversation all around. David played this song for us (second time I've heard him play it) and it just warmed my heart.
I think this song, as David's son Nate said, is "epic!" I love the imagery and all the iconic American references. I've heard it several times now and it has not worn off... it keeps getting better! It's titled: "We Have A Dream Again."
You can download a copy at http://davidwilcox.com/.
Enjoy!

Remember David Stoddard?
Dave played keyboards in the first Otis & the Alligators incarnation that I played with. He has moved on to solo acoustic guitar songwritin' and singin'. Here's a video of one of his songs. Click on the title of this post to go to his website.

Uh, really? Pearl Jam??!!
Yep! So my ole' buddy Mark, formerly of Stevens Point, calls me and asks what I'm doing Monday, the 16th. I say, 'nothin.' So he says "It's my birthday, I've rented a tour bus, and ten of us are going to Columbia, South Carolina to hear Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon. We'll pick you up, and drop you off. It's on me... Oh, and be prepared to hang with the band..."
Oh, really? We'll see about that. So, we're going, with a bit of trepidation. I mean, do they make earplugs that strong?
But, it'll be fun to celebrate Mark's B'day, eh?

Asheville's Almost Famous...
Annie and I are going out...a rare thing these days! We're going to the Cinebarre, a new movie theater/bar/restaurant a few miles from here. They're having an evening of fun in which local bands and music acts show their videos/short films and generally have a good time. They're not taking themselves too seriously as there will be some humorous awards, a red carpet and just a loose time.
Annie and I joke around about "goin' out to see what them young folks is up to." I'm sure we'll skew the average age up a few years but we're hoping it'll be fun.
I'll let ya know when we get back... (Click on the title of this post to read an article about the event.)

Music from the Asheville Ebel...
Hey, I forgot tell you guys y'all that my playing and music is in a movie...and...that movie got selected for the Sundance Film Festival...and...that movie got a Special Jury Prize, Dramatic Category, for the Spirit of Independence! Pretty cool...it's my first movie placement!!
The movie is titled Anywhere USA: The Movie and you should check out their website (click on the link to go there). Check out the director's notes, too. It's a pretty wild story how the film got made. It was filmed, or rather, video'd, entirely in Asheville using people off the street. No seasoned film actors anywhere to be seen.
When the director got the stunning word that the film was selected for Sundance, he had to go about clearing all the music used. He didn't have the time to get clearances on a couple pieces, so he called in a favor from Chris Rosser, who called me to replace a Kronos Quartet piece with a composition of our own. Cool. We called it the "Joe-nos Quartet." Chris replaced a marimba part with an electric piano part.
It's only fifty seconds, with about thirty seconds of me playing three violin/viola parts and Eliot Wadopian playing bowed bass. Chris Rosser plays the Wurlitzer Electric Piano.
Here's a clip:
