Statistics Made Understandable!

Wow! I just stumbled onto this video by Hans Rosling. This guy is absolutely amazing in his ability to distill huge quantities of data into a clrear, easy to understand presentation. In this video he shows 200 countries across 200 years and plots the life expectancies of their peoples vs. their incomes. Fascinating!

Braggin' Rights??

Well, as it happens, my friends are very creative and masterful musicians. Al Petteway and Amy White, dear friends of ours here in the Asheville area, have had their music placed in the new Ken Burns documentary series, "The National Parks - America's Best Idea". I played on a couple of the songs on the "Land of the Sky" album by Al and Amy. In fact, I'm proud to have been chosen to be the only 'outsider' on that CD!

Anyway, most of the music on the first show, "The Scripture Of Nature (1851-1890)", was Al and Amy's. Bill Mize also has a song placed in the series, but it's not in the first episode.

So, to cut to the chase, if you go here, you can view the show in its entirety. In my 'ego trolling' I made it easy for you to find my itty-bitty part in the show at around 50:50 remaining. The song starts at about 51:30 remaining. And, I made the credits! (about 1:58 remaining) Yay! So, though there's no cash for me (boo-hoo), I do get a bullet point on my press kit, Yay!

Big thanks to Al & Amy for the opportunity to be heard in that cool context!!!

Update: I just found out that same song is played in episodes 2 and 3.

Brink - New Show for Science Geeks

I just discovered this new show about science called Brink. It's on the Science Channel, but if you don't have that, you can view the segments on line.

Hey Mom! Here's a Look at Our House...

Annie did all the decorating this year and I'm so grateful! She did a great job and our house is nice and cozy with lots of Christmas Spirit. Check out the place of honor for the Ebels 1948 ornament!

David Sedaris on Undecided Voters

From newyorker.com:

I look at these people and can’t quite believe that they exist. Are they professional actors? I wonder. Or are they simply laymen who want a lot of attention?

To put them in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. “Can I interest you in the chicken?” she asks. “Or would you prefer the platter of shit with bits of broken glass in it?”

To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.

360 View from Max Patch

Max Patch is a grassy bald in Western North Carolina. It's just off I-40 on Exit 7 to be exact. That's about one hour from Asheville. The view is awesome and well worth the trip, expecially in the fall. Here's a panoramic video from the top of Max Patch. (The video got horked on the way up to YouTube, but it clears up about four seconds in...)

Lies, and Damn Lies

And the Honorable McCain speaks...

I don't know about you guys, but I'm tired of ignoring stupid email campaigns and ridiculous lies by rolling over and saying 'it won't do any good anyway.' I rightly don't care anymore and it's time we started our own echo chamber of truth...

Uh, really? Pearl Jam??!!

Yep! So my ole' buddy Mark, formerly of Stevens Point, calls me and asks what I'm doing Monday, the 16th. I say, 'nothin.' So he says "It's my birthday, I've rented a tour bus, and ten of us are going to Columbia, South Carolina to hear Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon. We'll pick you up, and drop you off. It's on me... Oh, and be prepared to hang with the band..."

Oh, really? We'll see about that. So, we're going, with a bit of trepidation. I mean, do they make earplugs that strong?

But, it'll be fun to celebrate Mark's B'day, eh?
