  4. Ok, truth be told, the reason we don't need guns here is that the owner, every so often, gives a bold bear some buckshot. He says, usually once is enough but on occasion, he's had to shoot a bear 2 or 3 times before they got the message. You can see a long ways from the cabin we're in and I've seen people walking, unaware a bear was heading their way on the path. As soon as the bear became aware of their presence he scooted off the path. Yes, it's risky being here, and it's an avoidable risk at that, unlike the risk of getting killed by another human. I didn't know how I would be with the bears. It took me a while to get acclimated and I am still pretty wary around them but not completely terrified. They have 20 years out here, without any bear incidents - except for when they are gone and the bears break into the cabins!
