Puerto Rico Trip - Aida's Vigil

We're back in Puerto Rico, this time for not so cheery reasons. Anne's aunt Aida is in the hospital with cancer. A large gathering of the extended Feliu family is here to say their goodbyes. (Feliu is Anne's mom's maiden name.) Aida is the last surviving sibling of Anne's mom and she was a large figure in Anne's childhood. Aida stayed in Asheville for a while and helped take care of Annie and her brothers.

Anne visited Puerto Rico when she was very young, while in her teens and in her early twenties. I joined her two years ago to visit her aunt Aida and explore the island. This time we're staying in Mayaguez, 30 minutes from San German (where the hospital is). The hotel is a Howard Johnson unlike any we've seen! It's a renovated monastery right downtown and across the street from the church. One block away is the town square. It is quite charming and I'll post pictures as I get them.

Our cell phones work here just as in the States...no extra charges. We seem to have good coverage, so feel free to call.

Happy wintering up there in the great white North!!

The panaderia across the street where we eat breakfast and lunch...
